Dining out is rarely just about the food. The atmosphere, the people, and the sense of a special event are equally important. When done right, a restaurant’s design enhances all of these features. When asked to design Table restaurant, Michiels Partners sought to create a statement through an experience that will engage each diner. Once a car’s repair shop, the open floor plan was an invitation to rethink the function and experience of the kitchen, a space often tucked-away and hidden from the eye of the customer. Michiels Partners added drama by inserting theatrical flourishes and by placing the kitchen in plain view of the diners, allowing for a continuous play on food.

Michiels Partners wanted the customer to be invited into the kitchen and have an authentic report with the cooks and the ingredients. ‘Sharing’ the kitchen with the customer was clear to Michiels Partners where each customer played a role. Table has been described as a sequence of intimate spaces that take you on a culinary journey. The restaurant’s foyer is personal, and a passageway to the upper rooms is lined with an acoustic ceiling pattern. The promenade to the upper level showcases a multitude of imported products that reflect the authenticity of the food. The upper rooms are more intimate than the first level and impress equally, day or night. Located in Shaw, Washington D.C.
