Situated near the vibrant Brookland neighborhood, this 3,282-square-foot, three-level residence draws inspiration from the 1930s Streamliner Era of railroads. The original one-story brick house with a basement did not meet contemporary housing needs. Michiels Partners revitalized the property by retaining the original footprint and doubling the square footage with a new second story that cantilevers from all sides. This design approach ensures a modern and harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape. The aluminum siding on the second floor reflects the industrial age’s legacy, with shadows cast by the adjacent Elm tree creating a dynamic interplay between nature and design. Three scuppers above the rear facade windows channel rainwater into a cascading waterfall, offering contemplative views on rainy DC afternoons.

Through this project, Michiels Partners skillfully channels the essence of speed and travel from the railroad era to 3116 Elm Street, NE. The community has embraced the new house, endearingly referring to it as “the Mushroom House”. Located in Washington, D.C.
